Non US born people: Do you call all Americans "Yankees" ?

I've heard people do it on tv and in films (British people, mostly), and it bugs the daylights out of me! People from the northeast section of the country are Yankees. I'm from the South, and a great many people I know there would take it as a deliberate insult if someone were to call them a "Yankee".
